Use Wordpress installation on external drive?

First of all I am not a native speaker so please excuse any humble or strange expression. Thanks a lot in advance!
I am using MAMP Pro on my M1 Mac. Until now I installed Wordpress on the same drive as the Mac OS together with MAMP Pro. For now it works as expected.
As I am using MAMP and a local Wordpress installation solely for theme development I wondered if it is possible to "route" MAMP to a Wordpress installation on an external drive - if this should be possible at all. I do not want to "SymLink" the Mac OS host directory to the external drive. I want a second host directory on an external drive which MAMP can handle.
Is it possible at all?
